Health impact of tyre particles causing “increasing concern”, say scientists

Scientists at Imperial College London say particles from car tyres are particularly harmful because of the toxic chemicals they are made of.

The report, based on data from the UK government, shows a significant increase in fine particulate pollution.  According to the research, tyre and brake wear will account for 52% of all fine particulate pollution from road transport in 2021, while wear on roads and their paint markings will contribute a further 24%. Only 15% of the pollution came from car exhausts, with a further 10% coming from vans and lorries. In addition, emissions from UK vehicles have fallen by 90% since 1996. The UK government’s environmental data has given the researcher a good insight into the main causes of transport pollution.  Ongoing measurement, monitoring and analysis helps researchers identify the problem and begin planning the solution.

  • How a cost-benefit analysis can help reduce emissions in the transport sector!

How a cost-benefit analysis can help reduce emissions in the transport sector!

We live in the era of Big Data. One of the challenges we face in reducing emissions is converting technical information (big data) into actionable materials that help people or organizations shape strategies.

Cost-benefit analysis serves two purposes: to verify that the benefits of an investment (or project) outweigh the costs, and to compare different costs.

The Climate and Clean Air in Latin American Cities (CALAC+) project has developed three tools to help evaluate emission reduction strategies and plans using the cost-benefit method.

    1. The benefits of better air for people and the environment

    3. Emission standards for new vehicle technologies

Sparrow is a unique turnkey solution that measures more than 15 different parameters without investing in new infrastructure, at street level, 24/7 and creates Big Data as a result. Once Big Data is collected, we incorporate it into an urban development strategy for a cleaner and more sustainable future.

  • Even chess players who think they can beat everything, can not beat the invisible air pollution!

Even chess players who think they can beat everything, can not beat the invisible air pollution!

There have been many studies which explore the effect air pollution has on cognition. This time, scholars studied the performance of 121 chess players in three seven-round tournaments in Germany in 2017, 2018, and 2019.

The researchers found out that, when the air pollution was worse, the chess players performed even more poorly when under time constraint. Juan Palacios, an economist in MIT’s Sustainable Urbanization Lab, said that when individuals were exposed to higher levels of air pollution, they made more and bigger mistakes than usual.

“There are more and more papers showing that there is a cost with air pollution, and there is a cost for more and more people”, palacios says. This is just one example proving that even chess players, who think they can beat everything, can not beat the invisible air pollution.

Sparrow is here to support policymakers and cities with a tool which can help them strategies their environmental plan.

Sparrow Unique Methodology – Detect | Monitor | Analyse

Sparrow Analytics is proud to announce that 2023 will be the year when cities and citizens can finally get proper information and insight about the urban environment.

Sparrow’s turnkey solution differs significantly from existing solutions. At the same time, we fully cooperate and calibrate with the existing form of measurement.

The main novelty in Sparrow’s approach is in relaying how we ‘measure’ pollution and other hazards. Based on a highly calibrated system (right up to patent filing), we equip any form of public transport. After that, we don’t just measure but mainly Detect pollution. We then conduct Monitoring to understand its source and behaviour. We follow this up with an Analysis based on real data and make it available to the city and the residents.

The EPA’s Enhanced Air Sensor Guidebook

Recognizing the ever-increasing availability of sensors, expanding scientific knowledge, and availability of best practices to support sensor use, the U.S. EPA significantly updated the 2014 Guidebook. The refreshed version, The Enhanced Air Sensor Guidebook, includes updated content and new topics that incorporate best practices, current knowledge, and recommendations on sensors.

The goal of the enhanced Guidebook is to support users in planning and collecting air quality measurements using air sensors. This Guidebook can help sensor users:

      • Learn the basics of air quality, air pollution monitoring, and air sensors
      • Plan and conduct an air quality monitoring study
      • Select, setup, and use air sensors
      • Analyze, interpret, communicate, and act on results
      • Understand the basics of air sensor performance

The enhanced Guidebook also contains expanded resources and content in the Appendices including: 1) General resources (e.g., air quality information, air sensor performance, data analysis tools), 2) a list of ‘Questions to Consider when Planning, Collecting, and Sharing Your Data’ to prepare sensor users for questions to expect from others, 3) Checklists for quickly determining how to select sensors, items to look for in a user manual, and maintaining air sensors, 4) information on data handling and the Air Quality Index, 5) education on Interpreting Sensor Performance Evaluation Results, and 6) a glossary of terms used in the guidebook.

Zero Pollution: EC proposes rules for cleaner air and water

On 26 October, the European Commission proposed stronger rules against pollution through revision of the Ambient Air Quality Directives, the Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive and the list of controlled surface and groundwater pollutants.

Clean air and water are essential for the health of people and ecosystems. Air pollution alone means nearly 300,000 Europeans die prematurely each year, and the proposed new rules will reduce deaths resulting from levels of the main pollutant PM2.5 above World Health Organization guidelines by more than 75% in 10 years.

    SparrowNews June 1, 2022

Here at Sparrow Analytics SA, we have some great news for the coming month. June is likely to be our month.

After more than 2.5 years of research and development, we can finally present our vision in every city or urban area. Of course, this is not possible without proper certification and calibration.

We are pleased to announce that our improved sensor design has been tested and calibrated by one of the highest caliber professionals:

Version 2.0 of Multi-Micro Sensor Device (MMSD) by Sparrow is tested and calibrated in the climate chamber newly developed by METAS. Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology. Calibration is vital for air pollution sensors to deliver reliable data from measurements. We thank METAS for its excellent support and professional assistance.

Special thanks go to Céline Pascale and Georgi Tancev for their continued support and professional work.

In summary, Sparrow Analytics SA would like to encourage all airpollution professionals to comply with regulatory requirements and provide reliable data based on both academic and field calibration and testing.

Without this, it is impossible to get a correct picture of airquality airqualitymonitoring in today’s city. We invite all professionals to learn from Sparrow Analytics SA experience and collaborate.
